Summary
We're excited to enhance our offering on the Extra Package, so that organizations have options for which domain their members use to access their Member Portal.
Custom Domain: Organizations can use their own domains for their members to access the member portal. This requires setting a DNS record (more on that later), but then the Member Portal can be served from your own domain. For example, if you own acmeclub.com, then you can serve Join It's member portal from members.acmeclub.com
Subdomain on members-portal.com Another option, which won't require you to adjust any DNS records, is to use our members-portal.com domain with your own subdomain. So this means, you can set something like 'acme' to be your subdomain - so that your members can access the member portal at: acme.members-portal.com
Guide to Setting up your DNS
1. Identify your DNS and gain access
The first step to setting up your custom domain is identifying where your Domain Name settings are managed. Common DNS providers are: GoDaddy, DNSimple, Cloudflare, OpenDNS, Namecheap, Quad9, and many more.
If you purchased your Domain name through one of these services, then it's common that you'll use the same service to manage your DNS settings.
If you're a part of a larger organization, then you might need to request that someone make this update on your behalf (in that case, you can send them this support article!).
2. Add a 'CNAME' record in your DNS
The next step is to actually create the 'CNAME' record within your DNS settings. This is what routes the traffic from your subdomain to our servers, so that we can serve your Member Portal on chosen subdomain.
When creating this 'CNAME' record, you'll use these traits:
Name:
Here's where you choose the 'name' of the subdomain
For example, if you want it to be 'members' - then you'll put "members.[your-domain].com" (without the quotation marks and by replacing [your-domain] with your domain).
To use a real example, we have a domain for 'memberdrive.com' and we'd like to host our Member Portal at 'portal.memberdrive.com' - so I've created a CNAME record with the name: portal.memberdrive.com
Screenshot #1 - Example of a CNAME record displaying the selected 'Name'
Content:
In the Content field, you'll want to include "us-east-1.galaxy-ingress.meteor.com"
This is what points to our hosted servers for your app
TTL:
This is the "Time To Live", and I'll usually put something close to 5 minutes
3. Send details to Join It
Once you've created your CNAME record within your DNS settings, you'll need to confirm this with Join It - and you'll need to send along your new settings to Join It.
There's one more step that Join It needs to complete once you confirm the full URL (subdomain and main domain) before your custom domain is considered 'Live'.
Guides
GoDaddy
GoDaddy.com is a very popular DNS provider, however, the UX can differ quite a bit depending on your product and market.
However, once you navigate to editing your DNS records - we should be able to walk through the experience together.
Below is a screenshot of the form that allows your to add a new DNS record.
Once you're on this screen, you can:
Make sure that you're creating a 'CNAME' record
Include the 'Name' of this record equal to the subdomain (e.g. if you want members.yourdomain.com, then put members.
When you include the 'value', this is where you point to our servers - you'll want to add: us-east-1.galaxy-ingress.meteor.com
Once this is complete, be sure to 'save' this record and send a screenshot over to the team at Join It - and they will finish the configuration.
